Over-the-range and built-in microwave repair

A microwave is the one kitchen appliance where a do-it-yourself diagnosis is genuinely dangerous: the high-voltage capacitor holds a charge long after the unit is unplugged. It is also an appliance where the fault list is short — a magnetron, a diode, a door interlock switch, or the control board and its touch panel.

We repair over-the-range, built-in, and countertop microwaves, including the extraction fan and light on over-the-range units. Every repair ends with a heating verification and an interlock and door seal check, because a microwave that heats but does not latch correctly is not a finished repair.

What usually goes wrong

  • Runs but does not heat

    A failed magnetron, high-voltage diode, or capacitor. This is the classic microwave fault.

  • Loud buzzing or humming under load

    A failing magnetron or transformer, most often heard shortly before it stops heating entirely.

  • Turntable will not rotate

    A failed turntable motor, a broken drive coupler, or debris under the roller ring.

  • Keypad unresponsive or keys stick

    Touch membrane failure — a separate part from the control board underneath it.

  • Stops as soon as the door closes

    One of the door interlock switches has failed; these are a safety circuit and are replaced as a set.

  • Extraction fan or light not working

    Fan motor, lamp holder, or the control relay driving them on an over-the-range unit.

I can very much recommend The Appliance Ranger. We wanted our dryer vent cleaned, I coordinated with 3 other neighbors to have the service done the same day for the 4 houses. The Technician Artem was excellent, on time (minus a gate code glitch) respectful of the property, worked quickly and efficiently and left the laundry room clean of all the lint behind the machines. I felt the pricing was a bit high, but the service comes with a 6 moths warranty. Is it worth repairing a countertop microwave?

Often not — a replacement can cost less than a magnetron. Over-the-range and built-in units are a different story, because replacing those means matching the cabinet opening and trim.

Can I replace a magnetron myself?

Please do not. The high-voltage capacitor holds a lethal charge even when unplugged, and it has to be discharged safely before anything else is touched.

My microwave sparks inside.

Stop using it. That is usually a burnt waveguide cover or damaged cavity paint, and both are repairable — but running it in that state makes the damage worse.

Do you repair the vent fan on an over-the-range microwave?

Yes, along with the light, the charcoal or grease filters, and the damper.
